
In 2001 local Samburu communities formed Sera Wildlife Conservancy with the aim of bringing together three historically rival ethnic groups to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in their traditional land. The initiative was so successful that in 2015 the Sera Rhino Sanctuary was established.

Ten rhinos from other areas in Kenya were transferred to Sera Wildlife Conservancy. It was the first community conservancy in East Africa to operate a sanctuary dedicated to the conservation of the critically endangered black rhino. It is also now the first in East Africa to offer black rhino tracking on foot.

Loijipu is an almost three year old black rhino who was found by rangers who tracked and watched and when it was clear that his mother was not returning he was adopted by the Rhino Sanctuary. He will be cared for until he is old enough to be reintroduced fully into the wild.
